Excellence in Health and Safety Award

This award celebrates best practice in operational health and safety concentrating on business as usual health and safety and recognising the valuable work the responsible managers do to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment for teachers, pupils and the general public every day.

2019 Winner:
Hallbrook Primary School, Leicestershire

 Hallbrook Primary School, Leicestershire
Health and Safety processes and procedures at Hallbrook Primary School have been exemplary since being overhauled by the school’s business manager. New procedures, including silent evacuations to ensure the school is successfully evacuated in the event of a terrorist attack, along with induction materials and intense staff training, combine to make the school among the most compliant in the UK. There are even plans to introduce a Health & Safety student group.

St Mary’s CE Primary School, Horsham
St Mary’s School Park and Stride invention project used technology to encourage children and parents to walk to school instead of parking outside the school gates, which can cause accidents. The project enables children to scan in on a portable Raspberry Pi device using RFID keyring tags at drop off points away from the school. They then walk to school and scan in again when safely onsite. It won first prize in PA Consulting’s annual Raspberry Pi programming competition.

Bethany School, Kent
With the government recently announcing that an expert advisory group is going to look at how teachers and school leaders can be better supported, it has never been more important to have happy and motivated pupils in the classroom. Bethany School, a co-educational day and boarding school, has demonstrated a breadth and depth of work to support wellbeing and mental health. This has shown a positive impact on staff and pupils.

Eccleston Lane Ends Primary School, Merseyside
More than 35 students from Eccleston Lane Ends visited a construction development for a health and safety-focussed introduction to the different elements of a busy building site. The Site manager provided an overview of the development taking place, introducing the different job roles and pieces of machinery and concluding with the importance of health and safety, explaining the many potential dangers and common hazards on a construction site.

Cwmfelinfach Primary School, Wales
Cwmfelinfach Primary has been involved in the healthy schools programme since 2005, and with the support of the local healthy schools team has worked to enrich its pupils’ lives through schemes such as dance and cookery classes, a forest school, gardening classes at the local allotments and textiles classes. The school recently received the National Quality Award – the highest award a school can obtain through the Welsh Network of Healthy School Schemes.

For the Community Café at Clare Mount, pupils have to complete a Health and Safety checklist before opening. To ensure the produce is stored safely, the checklist includes; checking the fridge temperatures, making sure the fridge is stocked in the appropriate way; throwing away any out-of-date produce. The pupils are trained to identify fire exits and to maintain clear exits at all times. They are also trained to know the emergency evacuation procedure, which includes a method of roll call for staff and any visiting customers. In May, the café was inspected by the Food Standards Agency and given the top rating of 5.

Barnston Primary

 Barnston Primary

A recent local authority audit in January 2017 comfirmed that Barnston Primary School has excellent health and safety practices which are intrinsic throughout the organisation. Health and safety features at the beginning of all staff meetings, whole school staff briefings and in meetings with the school’s F1 provider. Parents are updated via newsletters. Although fire safety, electrical safety, kitchen safety and playground area checks are carried out annually, the school caretaker undertakes in-house fire safety and playground checks every day. Ddisability pupils receive their own risk assessments which are shared with staff and parents. For the well-being of staff, a menopause group has been set up for six collaboration schools in order to help those who suffer and need support in the workplace.

2016 Winner
Maltings Academy

Maltings Academy has received top marks following a successful British Safety Council Five Star Occupational Health and Safety Audit in June 2015 for the third year running. Alongside a British Safety Council Sword of Honour for excellence in health and safety, such recognition plays a key part in creating a happy, healthy and safe school site which has culminated in an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating last year.
